My Other Life

Filed under: COMMERCIAL & EDITORIAL, Madame Tussauds — Catherine @ 10:31 am

Lots of you have been asking lately why a wedding photographer is being sent around the World on photo shoots! I’ve been here there and everywhere over the last few months, and posted some pictures of my travels along the way.

Well, for those of you who don’t know, in addition to photographing some beautiful U.K. and destination weddings each year, I still also work as an editorial photographer. You see, before falling in love with photographing weddings, I worked as a staff photographer for a national press agency, being sent across the U.K. on multiple assignments per day, every day, for the national broadsheets and magazines. As a result, my work has been published in every U.K. national newspaper in the country, with some front pages along the way too. I was also runner-up Times Young Photographer of the Year for two years running, which gave me the courage to go out on my own and work freelance, mostly working for The Times, the Press Association and Grazia Magazine. My Client List has grown a little since then, and I now work for several other publication houses and commercial clients.

The posts you’ve seen this year of my foreign assignments in Tokyo, Beijing, Amsterdam, Berlin & Sydney have been a result of my shoots for Madame Tussauds. I’m one of three photographers who are flown around the World to take photographs of celebrities that they wish to make wax figures of. My job is to fly out to the celebrity, have a portrait shoot with them and then photograph them in very little clothing, enabling me to capture every detail of their body for the sculptors to work from. Needless to say, these pictures are *highly* confidential! As such, I’m obviously not allowed to post any pictures on my blog, or even say who I’ve photographed, for fear of my ruining the big unveiling in a year’s time.

I shall be creating some special blog posts in the coming weeks, featuring some of my editorial work, from Portraits and Sport to the slums in Kolkata. In the meantime, I have an entirely separate website dedicated to the editorial side of my work over at Catherine Mead Photography. Pop over and take a look if you’d like to find out more about what I get up to when I’m not photographing some beautiful weddings each year:

On Assignment | Sydney

Filed under: COMMERCIAL & EDITORIAL, Madame Tussauds — Catherine @ 2:06 pm

Well, it’s been a manic few weeks! As you know, I’ve been away in Mexico & Belize for a month during November and December (more to come on those pictures soon). I landed at Heathrow on the Friday and was then asked to fly out to Sydney on the Monday for another Madame Tussauds photo shoot. Mild panic set in at the amount of flying time I’ve accrued over the past few months, and my lack of Christmas shopping completed!

So, I flew to Sydney last Monday, landed in Sydney on the Wednesday, held the photo shoot on Thursday, flew out of Sydney on Friday, and landed back at Heathrow on Saturday. Having spent 60 hours travelling and only 48 hours on Australian soil, I have very little to show for my time there, but here’s a random selection of pictures from my wandering around the city, from koalas & bats to doorways:

On Assignment | Beijing

Filed under: COMMERCIAL & EDITORIAL, International Assignments, Madame Tussauds — Catherine @ 3:47 pm

I’m back from another shoot, this time in Beijing. As someone who is OBSESSED with lanterns (clearly), I couldn’t get enough of walking around the streets of the city on my last night there. Beijing’s speciality is roast duck pancakes, and I managed to eat duck every day for the 3 days I was there……. I may start quacking soon.

Anyway, I’m back in the country for a few days before heading off on Friday to Mexico for a month, starting off with Jose Villa’s Photography Workshop which I’m beyond excited about. I can’t wait to learn from one of the world’s very top wedding photographers, and I’m hoping it will further improve my work in the future.

Sadly I’m never allowed to publish the photographs from my celebrity photo shoots for Madame Tussauds, but here are a selection of my own personal pictures from the little time I had to explore Beijing between shoots:

I’m currently working away in Beijing on another assignment for Madame Tussauds. I’ll be writing a full post once I’m back in the U.K. next week, but here’s a photo from my wandering around this afternoon.

On Assignment | Amsterdam

Filed under: COMMERCIAL & EDITORIAL, International Assignments, Madame Tussauds — Catherine @ 8:39 pm

I’m currently away in Amsterdam on another assignment for Madame Tussauds. As ever, due to confidentiality agreements, I’m not allowed to show any of the photographs from the photo shoot, or even say who I’ve photographed. I’ve not seen much of the city, but I managed to wander around a wet and windy Amsterdam for an hour this afternoon before boarding my flight home.
